I'm new to this style, and I would like to get the feel for myself first how does it feel to play salsa. I'm looking for a book to teach me to play alone. It's a whole new exciting world out there. To understand the piano part, you've got to understand clave and how the piano part fits with the other instruments in the rhythm section. He shows you what role is played by each instrument in the basis afro-cuban styles. I'd also recomment a Pancho Sanchez video about Latin music basics. I've recently started learning it and it's great fun, but I've got a group to play with. Indeed, Latin music is really all about rhythm. It's important to realize that, even more than in swing jazz, the piano in Latin music is part of the rhythm section. I'm just alerting you to the fact that it won't teach you to play a piece of music that you could perform. ![]() If you're just looking to get a feel for the sound of a Montunno, the book is great. It's good, but an earlier poster raises the right question: Are you looking to play solo piano or with a Latin group? The book Montunno book is geared towards learning showing the part you'll play with a group. ![]()
